French

At Wimbledon Chase, children are taught French by specialist teachers from Year 1 to Year 6.

In Year 1, Mrs Belkebir, a native French speaker, provides 30 minutes per week of songs, games and rhymes.  The children learn to speak French with authentic accents and enthusiasm.

In Year 2, children have 45 minutes per week of French with Mrs Belkebir and their progression in the language is obvious.  The standard of their speaking skills can be seen in the short DVD which was filmed for our French Day.

In Key Stage 2, the children have one hour per week of French and follow the KS2 Framework and objectives for Modern Foreign Languages.

In Year 3, lessons are again taught by Mrs Belkebir.  The children learn to act out stories such as Le Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding Hood) and some of their lessons are linked to the creative curriculum.

In Years 4 and 5 the children are taught by another specialist French teacher, Mrs Davies; in Year 6, they are taught by Mrs Bodle. They practise their French in role play conversations and learn how to talk about themselves and their families.  They also learn about Intercultural Understanding and Knowledge About Languages.  In the final term of Year 6, children begin learning Spanish as a “taster” for the different languages which will be offered to them in secondary school.

In Year 5, children have the opportunity to take part in a 5 day residential visit to a village called Bernieres sur Mer in Normandy in France (see photos included in the French Day DVD).

Wimbledon Chase has an excellent reputation for the standard of French reached by the children.  Our passion for the subject is celebrated during our regular French Days.
