Physical Education

PE & Sports

We recognise that PE needs to build on the children’s natural enthusiasm for movement, by expressing and testing themselves in a variety of situations.

We believe that Physical Education should lead to a sense of well-being, a greater understanding of health and fitness, a healthy lifestyle and a feeling of self-confidence.

From Reception to Year 6 all children are timetabled to receive two hours of PE and Games per week.

Sports Day

Every year in early July we hold our annual Sports Day for children from Reception to Year 6.  Parents are actively encouraged to attend and cheer the children along, as well as take part in a fun parents’ race.

As part of the National Curriculum, children have swimming lessons run by GLL at Morden Park Pools.  The children go swimming for a term in Year One, Year Two and Year Three.  The lessons are differentiated into three groups to allow the instructors to both support and challenge all children.

Merton School Sports Partnership (MSSP)

The school is part of MSSP and is part of the Wimbledon Cluster of Primary schools which consists of Dundonald, Wimbledon Park, The Priory CE, Holy Trinity CE, Pelham, Bishop Gilpin CE, All Saints CE, Merton Abbey and St Mary’s RC.  The MSSP regularly organises tournaments and festivals between schools in the cluster.

In a number of sports such as football, tag rugby, netball, rounders, athletics and cricket, the cluster competitions have a pathway to Borough finals and the London Youth Games.

Connellan Trophy

In cricket, Wimbledon Chase is the only state Primary school in Merton to enter a hard ball cricket competition.  The competition, run by the Surrey Cricket Federation, has a finals day every July held at prestigious locations.

Extra Curricular Clubs

Wimbledon Chase offers a variety of sports and dance clubs which take place before, during and after school hours.  These clubs include multiskills, dodgeball, football, tennis, cricket, yoga, hockey, tag rugby, running, netball, street dance, tap & jazz.

Community Links

The school has very good links to local community sports clubs such as the Old Ruts, AFC Wimbledon, Wilton Tennis Club, Wimbledon Racquet and Fitness Club.  Children are encouraged to join their local clubs wherever possible.
